Streaming has changed how we listen to music. Where once you had to store your music library as files on your computer, phone or MP3 player after buying songs online or ripping your CD collection, nowadays online streaming services give you instant access to millions of songs, so you can listen to new music or enjoy some old favourites - wherever your mood takes you.
The below steps would show you how to connect Spotify to Alexa enabled devices with Spotify Premium plan by using Spotify Connect, a Spotify remote control that enables you to listen to Spotify on speakers, TVs, and other devices using the Spotify app. Connect your Alexa enabled device and Spotify app to the same WiFi network. On your Spotify account you can have many 'Spotify connect' devices; nevertheless, alexa will NOT let you play on all of them. I spent like half an hour with alexa support and it is like this: a Spotify connect device should be 'alexa compatible' to be able to be used by alexa for Spotify.
With more than 75 million subscribers around the world, Spotify is the undisputed king of music streaming services. It’s compatible with Amazon’s Alexa personal assistant, so if you have a compatible device, you can stream a song just by asking for it, and play songs, compile playlists, search for artists or find a public playlist - all using just your voice.
Both Spotify Free and Premium users in India will also be able to stream Spotify through Amazon Alexa for the first time. Discover More How to Set Up Spotify on Your Amazon Alexa-Enabled Device. Here’s how to connect Amazon Alexa to Spotify: First, download the Amazon Alexa app from the Google Play or App store, and follow the prompts to set up your new Amazon Echo or Echo Dot. Once connected, go to “Settings,” select “Music,” click “Link New Service,” and then tap “Spotify” to input your Spotify username and password.
It only takes these simple steps to open up a whole world of hands-free music streaming.
Note: You’ll need a Spotify Premium account to control Spotify with Alexa: if you only have the free Spotify account, voice control is not available. We’ll explain the difference between the types of account in step 2.
Step 1: Set up your Amazon Echo speaker
For this you’ll need the Alexa app, which you can download for both iOS devices and Android devices. Setting it up is pretty straightforward – for your complete step-by-step guide, from getting it out of the box to mastering all its tips and tricks, check out our guide to setting up Amazon Echo.
Step 2: Download Spotify
The Spotify app is free to download for iOS and Android devices – you can find it on the Apple App Store or in Google Play. The basic version is free to use, but it’s a limited service – you can only skip so many songs at a time, for example, and you can’t pick which song plays when on a playlist. You’ll also have to listen to adverts between songs – these can’t be skipped.
![Spotify Spotify](/uploads/1/3/4/1/134138900/504708111.jpg)
If you pay £9.99 a month, you’ll get no adverts, unlimited skips, the ability to listen offline and to pick which song plays when. You’ll also get higher quality audio. This is known as Spotify Premium.
Premium is cheaper for students. There’s also Premium for Family, which gives access to up to six people living at the same address. This costs £14.99 a month.
Whichever option you choose, the Spotify app is free to download, so you don’t have to worry about being charged anything. But as we said earlier, you'll need Spotify Premium in order to control it using Alexa.
Step 3: Log into Spotify
Now it’s time to log into Spotify. Just enter your email address/username and password when prompted.
Not used Spotify before? No problem. You can sign up in just a few seconds.
Step 4: Link your Spotify account
Within the Alexa app, go to Settings (the cog icon in the bottom right corner of the screen) > Music & Media> Spotify. Tap the link to Link account on Spotify.com and you’ll be prompted to log into Spotify.
It will then alert you that Alexa will be able to receive this Spotify account data – this includes the proviso that your information may be transferred outside the EEA. If you’re OK with that, tap Okay.
Your Spotify account is now linked with your Amazon Echo speaker.
Step 5: Make Spotify your default music service
It’s all well and good having Spotify linked to your Echo speaker, but it’s a pain having to request Alexa to open the programme each time you want to play a song.
Thankfully there is a way around that – make it your default music service. That way, you can just say “Alexa, play pop” and it’ll start blasting out the hits of the day directly from Spotify.
To make Spotify your default music service, go to Settings> Music & Media within the Alexa app, then tap Choose Default Music Services. By default, your default music service is Amazon Music. Just tap the Spotify box to change it to Spotify, then tap Done.
Step 6: Start controlling
Now it’s time to start using Spotify hands-free on your Echo speaker. You have a ton of voice commands at your disposal: most of them are pretty obvious but some are a little more niche.
The basics include “Play”, “Pause”, “Shuffle” (and “Stop shuffle”) and “Resume”, all of which are self-explanatory.
You can also be more general with your requests, for example “Play some music”, “Play what’s hot in Brazil” and “Play songs similar to the sixties.”
You can be more specific, too. These controls include “Play [song/album/artist]”, “Play [name emotion] music”, “Play [radio station name]”, “Play [playlist name]”. You can create playlists, add songs/albums/artists to an already existing playlist, and block songs with explicit lyrics, all by asking. You can also request information by asking questions like “Who’s the lead singer for [band name]?”
Which devices support Alexa control for Spotify?
A range of Alexa-compatible devices support hands-free Spotify control. These are: the Amazon Echo, Echo Show, Echo Dot, Echo Spot, Amazon Tap (which isn’t currently available in the UK), Fire TV Cube (again, not yet available in the UK) and Sonos One smart speaker.
All of these have Alexa built-in, so you can control your Spotify just by speaking. To get set up on any of these devices, just follow the steps above.
What if I don’t want to control Spotify by speaking?
No problem. You can connect to your Echo speaker over Bluetooth and use the Spotify app on your phone to control it remotely.
Yes, you CAN listen to Spotify with Alexa, and yes, it’s super easy.

#1. Easily connect your Spotify account to Alexa
While you can easily stream Spotify to your Alexa device via Amazon Alexa Bluetooth, directly connecting your Spotify account to Alexa so you can play your favorite tunes and playlists with simple Alexa commands is definitely the way to go.
First, link your Spotify account to Alexa
Bottom line: if you’re a frequent Spotify listener, it’s a no-brainer to connect Alexa to Spotify. And luckily, it only takes a minute by following the steps in the section below:
- Open your Alexa app
- Tap the hamburger icon in the upper left corner
- Tap “Settings”
- Scroll down, and tap “Music & Podcasts”
- Tap “Spotify” under the “Services” section
- Tap “Link Account”
- Follow simple instructions on account linking page
Second, make Spotify your default music player
If you’re a frequent Spotify listener, it’s a good idea to set your default music player to Spotify. That way if you want to play Justin Bieber on Spotify, you can just say “Alexa, play Justin Bieber,” and Alexa will automatically play it from Spotify. With Spotify selected as the default, you don’t need to say “Alexa, play Justin Bieber on Spotify.”
Here’s how to make Spotify your default Alexa music player:
- Open the Alexa app
- Tap the hamburger icon in the upper left corner
- Tap “Settings”
- Scroll down, and tap “Music & Podcasts”
- Tap “Default Services”
- Set Spotify as your default under the headings “Music” and, if you’d like, “Artist & Genre Stations” (although if you use a service like Pandora, you might want it to be the default Artist & Genre Station in lieu of Spotify)
Pro Tip: What about Spotify podcasts on Alexa?
Great news — you can listen to your Spotify podcasts on Alexa just as you would listen to music.
If you’re planning on listening to podcasts on your Alexa devices on the regular, it’s a good idea to set up Spotify as your default podcast player by following the steps below:
- Open the Alexa app
- Tap the hamburger icon in the upper left corner
- Tap “Settings”
- Scroll down, and tap “Music & Podcasts”
- Tap “Default Services”
- Set Spotify under the Podcasts heading
#2. Start up Spotify on Alexa with your voice
Now that you’ve linked your Spotify account to Alexa and made Spotify your default music player, you can easily start streaming your tunes with basic Alexa voice commands.
The 6 basic Spotify Alexa commands you need to know:
#1. Play music: “Alexa, play Despacito” or “Alexa, play Bruce Springsteen songs” or “Alexa, play country music.”
#2. Navigate: “Alexa, skip song,”
#3. Adjust Volume:“Alexa, turn it up!” or “Alexa, set volume to 4”
#4. Stop music:“Alexa, turn off the music” or “Alexa, stop” works too
#5. Pick up where you left off when you were playing Spotify on your Spotify app or web player: “Alexa, play Spotify” will continue playing the artist, playlist or station you were last listening to. I listen to Spotify from my phone on my walk home, and I love that Alexa lets me seamlessly transition listening from my phone to my Echo speaker when I walk in the door. Try it out!
#6. Resume a Spotify podcast: say “Alexa, resume podcast” and she’ll play the podcast from where you left off, even if you were listening to the podcast on your Spotify app. So helpful!
#3. Play your Spotify playlists on Alexa
Once you’ve linked your Spotify account to Alexa and set it as the default Music provider by following the steps in Section 1 above, you’re ready to easily play a Spotify playlist on Alexa. Some more good news: turning on your playlists with Alexa on Spotify has gotten so much easier over the past year.
Play any playlist
“Alexa, play [insert playlist name] playlist.”
Play your liked songs
To play your Liked Songs (the ones you tap the heart icon for), say “Alexa, play my Liked Songs”
Pro Tip: If you have trouble with this command, try adding “on Spotify” to the end so “Alexa, play my Liked Songs on Spotify” (sometimes this helps if you’re having issues even if you’ve made Spotify your default music player).

Spotify Playlist Hack: Use a simple Alexa routine to listen to more easily listen to Spotify playlists
When I listen to music, I generally listen to my favorite playlist of the moment. But I can never remember the exact Spotify playlist name to summon it with Alexa. My solution? Use a simple Alexa routine to turn on that playlist when you say “Alexa, playlist.”
Here’s how to set it up:
- Open your Alexa app
- Tap the hamburger icon in the upper left corner
- “Tap Routines”
- Tap the + icon in the upper right corner to open up a New Routine tab
- Enter your Routine name (i.e. Workout Mix Playlist)
- Tap “When This Happens”
- Tap “Voice”
- Type what you want to say to Alexa to play your playlist, for example: “Alexa, play Workout Mix”
- Tap “Add Action”
- Tap “Music”
- Enter your playlist name (as it’s named on Spotify)
- Select Spotify as the music provider
- Tap “Set Time” if you’d like the music to play for a desired time (totally optional!)
- Select which of your Echo devices you want to play the music from
- Tap “Save” and you’re ready to go!
You can easily change the routine to play a different Spotify playlist (for when your favorite workout playlist inevitably changes).
Or, why not create a few Alexa routines for different playlists? Just create a few routines with different Alexa command triggers. For example, “Alexa, morning playlist,”“Alexa, relaxing playlist,” “Alexa, energize playlist,” etc.
Bonus: More pro tips for an even better Alexa Spotify experience
Pro Tip #1: Play music across all your Echo speakers
Just add “everywhere” to the end of your Alexa command like this: “Alexa, play 90’s Country everywhere.” And — voila! — every room will now be immersed in sound.
Pro Tip #2: Set a music alarm
Just say “Alexa, wake me up to Soak Up the Sun at 7am.” I do love a little Sheryl Crow in the morning, but you can insert the song, artist or genre of your choice!
Pro Tip #3: Don’t have a premium (paid) Spotify account? No worries!
You can still play Spotify on Alexa! You don’t have to pay a penny, but you’ll still need to link your account and set Spotify as the default music player to hear tunes on Spotify rather than Amazon music.
